Breast Biopsy
FOR THE NEXT DAY OR SO
The patient may resume normal activities immediately, but no strenuous upper body movement, including heavy lifting, for 24 hours. The biopsy site should be kept dry and the bandage undisturbed until the following day, at which time a shower or bath is permissable. After the shower, bacitracin (which will be provided )and a bandaid may be applied to the small wound for one additional day. The area may then be left uncovered. Tylenol every 4 to 6 hours is recommended for any mild discomfort. Ice for the first 12 hours post biopsy, then heat applied to the biopsy site will keep swelling to a minimum and also help relieve any discomfort. Mild oozing from the biopsy site and skin discoloration is common. If more pronounced bleeding occurs, firm pressure should be held with a clean towel and ice for at least 15 minutes. If bleeding continues after that, we encourage a phone call, though there is no danger to the patient. Aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications may be resumed in 24 hours.
